Marriage

"God Himself is the author of marriage...(It) is not a purely human institution, despite the many variations it may have undergone through the centuries in different cultures, social structures, and spiritual attitudes." (ccc 1603).

Marriage between a man and a woman is part of God's plan for creation. He created man and woman for one another, to complement, or complete, one another. He has called us all to love, and the unbreakable bond that is forged in a sacramental marriage, frees us to love totally and in complete self-giving.

The Church takes marriage seriously enough to recognize its sacramental nature. It was at the wedding at Cana that Jesus performed His first public miracle, changing water to wine. As Mary witnessed at Cana, the Church sees the "goodness of marriage..." and that marriage is a "sign of Christ's presence." (ccc1613)
